In August, riots erupted across Papua after an alleged racist incident in Surabaya, causing more than 30 deaths in one of the most serious protests in Papua. The 22 May riot in Jakarta occurred after supporters of Prabowo Subianto rejected the result of the election. The year was also marked by protests and riots, led by government opposition and Indonesian students. Indonesians also elected another hundreds of members of People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), and members of local legislative bodies, making it one of the largest single-day election in the world.
